about

The first verse is from the perspective of a soldier. Headed into battle (over the top). He/she realizes that death is probably the most likely scenario (prepare yourself for Elysium), but is obedient (you call my name, I come running).

Chorus is both obvious and ambiguous if that’s possible. Talking about how power corrupts and how desperate it can feel to try and find the truth of a situation.

The second verse is a call out to how different the perspectives can be in regards to war, whether you are the one fighting or sending someone to fight. And how once you are the one fighting, sometimes the ideals that caused you to volunteer can unravel.

lyrics

Alright boys
Line ‘em up
Over the top
Over the top!

Blood alone moves the wheels of history
Together we prevail in misery
This statement made with an underscore
Only the dead have seen the end of war

So prepare yourself for Elysium
The broken cadence of a distant drum
Who will save me if I become... delirious

You call my name
I come running
I come running

When absolute power
Reveals who you are
The desperate cling
To the truth like a bomb
When absolute power
Destroys who you are
The desperate cling
To the truth like a bomb

You see a leash
I see a noose
A generation who has lost their youth

You see the news
I see a ruse
A polititian who is still confused

Every ideal they spun
Dismantled one by one

Call courageous
It’s not enough
To die for love
It’s not enough
You push and shove
It’s not enough
It’s not enough

When absolute power
Reveals who you are
The desperate cling
To the truth like a bomb
When absolute power
Destroys who you are
The desperate cling
To the truth like a bomb
